The Extension!!
The Summerdale Line was always intended to be extended. I built the line with extension in mind. There are a few different
possibilities for extension which have all been considered. The original line did not run the full length of the garden,
Only about 3/4. The first idea was to simply extend the line onwards from there, so it ran to the top of the garden and
terminated. After some heavy thought, I decided that would not be enough for me. Then came the second idea. Instead of
extending from the terminus upwards, I considered running a loop off the lower section of the original line, round the
bottom part of my garden. This would create a "b" shape, if you like. The new track would come off the original line about
half way up and swing right, cross the garden path - utilizing a liftout section, run along the top of a low wall between flower
beds, then come back, down the other side of the garden on stilts. The final section would be the raised section coming back
towards my shed [where the line starts], crossing the path again, using another, somewhat large, liftout section.
The third and final plan is the one that is current in action. It is a mixture of the two plans described above. The line
continues onwards, up the garden as in plan 1, then bends right - behind my dad's shed - across the top of the garden. Once
on the other side of the garden it bends again and heads back down the opposite side of the garden to the terminus until it
reaches the low wall that the second plan utilized. Running along this wall, back to the original track, the new extension turns
the entire layout into a "P" shape.
Construction of the extension begun in March 2007. As of 10/03/07 the trackbed is in place up to the back of the large shed at
the top of the garden.
